Course Description

Ray Harmony

Ray Harmony is a multi award-winning college lecturer, and the author of critically-acclaimed book "Hack Music Theory". After decades of teaching popular and classical music theory, Ray created a unique crossover method for songwriting and producing, which he called Hack Music Theory. He uses this method to make all his music, which has featured Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), Kool Keith, and more!

Anyone who has finished Apprenticeship 1 and is wondering 'Do I really need Apprenticeship 2?', I would say the answer is a resounding 'Yes!' This course builds on everything Ray and Kate teach in the first apprenticeship course and takes you further down the rabbit hole of what is possible with your music making when you have music theory to guide you. My main takeaway from this second course is that Ray's song-whispering method is the real deal. It will always take you from the seed of an idea to a finished song if you just trust in the process. The genius of his method lies in the fact that you can let the song lead you as it unfolds, rather than steering it in a pre-determined direction from the outset. This keeps everything fresh as you find yourself writing sections you had no preconceived notion of when you started out. I cannot thank Ray and Kate enough for providing me with this new skill I can call upon whenever I need to scratch that creative itch!

As a music theory noob, it's a much needed insight of an expert approach to songwriting. I learned so much about feeling and conceptualising (the song whispering technique!) along with the theory foundation to start experimenting confidently. Kate and Ray go through simple and complicated music building processes in a light, fun, artistic and logical way. It is a beast and it really shows the amount of knowledge and skill required to write proper song. Gives a good song structure road map - the purpose of the verse, chorus, bridge and other types of parts and transitions; as demonstrated. I love that that all of the theory and structure is a pretence to breaking the rules and flexing your creative muscles; which they encourage and give you ideas for. As Ray says "You gotta know the rules to break them". It is, without a doubt, the best music making investment I have made - what use are monitors if you cant shift comfortably between keys, modes and time signatures? I don't have anything negative to say but I would point out that it can be a steep learning curve that takes some dedication to get the full learning benefits. Amateurs and veterans will love it - noobs should be on the committed enthusiast level.

I loved it.. I spent almost 2 months on this while writing a new tune. The difference is mine is a instrumental and I wanna add me playing guitar to it before I release it. Sadly I will miss my 2 favorite instructors.. I really feel this time I have a map from the intro to the end. My goals are to not follow trends Keep voice whispering , poly-metering and use some flapping.. lol From this day forward I'm going let my music talk to me and not copy and paste the same sections without variations. Keep the energy flowing and use different modes, odd scales and harmony. This is my goal.. Franz
