Course Description

Ray Harmony

Ray Harmony is an award-winning music lecturer, and the author of critically-acclaimed book series "Hack Music Theory". After decades of teaching ‘popular’ and ‘classical’ music theory, Ray created a unique crossover method for songwriting and producing, which he calls "Hack Music Theory". He uses this method to make all his music, which has featured Serj Tankian (System of a Down), Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Kool Keith, and many more!

I bought this apprenticeship after having watched several Revolution Harmony YouTube videos. This Apprenticeship course grew out of these YouTube videos. The YouTube videos are short, concise tutorials in which Ray and Kate present songwriting concepts; precise 'nuggets' ('hacks' as they name them). These are short practical practical musical techniques , which when applied, can achieve quite startling results in what might otherwise have been a fairly pedestrian song or a song maybe, that needed a 'lift' or some sparkle. This apprenticeship takes the YouTube approach and expands it to show the whole process. Ray and Kate write a complete song with, verses, choruses, bridges etc. leaving in all the thought processes and conversation that go along with writing the song. As someone whose worked through it I can only say it's worth every penny and much more. I've applied many of the hacks and they really have lifted my own writing.

I couldn't possibly say enough in favor of this course. Maybe if I did it as a thesis, but I don't have time for that and nobody would read all that, so... I will say that I have struggled to understand music theory especially certain elements of it for as long as I've been playing music (the better part of 30 years) and in just this year alone I've absorbed and understood more than all of the other years combined and it is 100 (one - hun- dred) % due to taking this course. My music is coming together like it never has and I will forever be indebted to Ray and Kate Harmony for this. Thank you for welcoming me to your family almost a year ago and thank you for all that you are doing for us to help us along our musical paths! Take this course. You will never regret it. Period. This is IT!

I was not disappointed in any way with this course. I had been considering it for some time as I liked how Ray and Kate got information across in their Youtube videos. I put it off however as I always seemed to be too busy and was waiting for a quieter time where I could concentrate on the course content more. I finally thought that things never seem to get any quieter so I may as well start the apprenticeship and get on with it. I honestly wish I had taken the plunge earlier. The skills you will get from this course will without a doubt help you compose the music you want.

This course covered it all, from song structure to theory to lyrics (and more). I came into this apprenticeship sight-unseen wanting to know more about counterpoint, transitioning, and arranging. Since I write melodies as a result of a predetermined chord progression, I also wanted to learn how to fit a chord progression to a melody that's bouncing around in my head. This apprenticeship was divine intervention, as I received quite an education in all of that and much more!!!!! Highly recommended for musicians of all levels. A gentle suggestion would for Kate and Ray to add an optional chapter to each section displaying how the parts that were covered should look at the end of the respective lesson. This would help those of us playing along at home to make sure we stay on point. I followed along in my DAW until chapter 8 when it became apparent that I took an exit somewhere along the line while everyone continued on the motorway.

Bonjour Ray & Kate, I have to thank you a lot for this apprenticeship. Before this experience, I was loosing more and more my motivation for composing because I wasn't satisfied with my creations and no matter the time and efforts I putted in it, this wasn't working... Now, I think that you gave me the knowledge of auto-analysing what I'm doing, and most of all, you showed me how to structure my time during the process, and that's what I needed to learn. Seeing you thinking out loud gave me a new perspective of how I should work, and how to use the musical knowledge that I aquired to create more interesting creations. I have to admit that the price of the course is very low if you take into account the quantity of hacks that you give in these videos and the total duration of this course. It's an actual bargain !! Now is the end of the days of unproductive work and the beginning of a new age of composition for me. Cheers from France ! You're the best.

I'd been wandering off for quite a while trying to write and complete atleast one song. I followed the YouTube channel for quite a while before taking this course and I wish I'd only taken it sooner. The course has given me a lot of confidence and clarity on how to write my own music and not only that, I can write much faster and it the music actually makes a lot more sense now. I've been playing guitar and bass for 9 years now and wasn't able to write anything that made me think I can release it , but now ,it just feels like what Ray says in the last episode that these courses are going to push you decades ahead in knowledge and most importantly its application. Honestly , It would have taken me a lot more years to uncover what's already mentioned in this course. One more thing I find useful after taking this course is that I was able to hear parts in the songs I liked and was able to break through how the composer came up with them , which earlier was just dream for me. Thank you!

Ray and Kate have always been supportive from the get go. This course is as in depth as it gets with regards to writing a song, including drum programming relevant to each section; an added bonus if you ask me. Going right down to the micro decision level of why the choice was made to go from this note to that and how it will affect the rest of the decisions made and about to be made. All presented with a sense of fun and excitement which is constantly engaging and never boring. Not the kind of course you can fall asleep to if this is what you are into. Just an insane amount of information presented clearly and precisely. If you can, then go and support them on Patreon @ http://www.patreon.com/revolutionharmony/ You will not be disappointed and you will be helping two brilliant and talented creators do what they do best, help others to do their best.

This apprenticeship course has really changed the game for me in a huge way!! I have been looking for something like this for a long time, theory now makes so much more sense to me, and have been able to overcome so many silly hurtles and speed bumps I found to be difficult before and they now have become simple and easier to achieve where I want to be. I'm still very excited and happy to have found this course, even if I won the lottery I wouldn't be as excited or as happy as I am now, these courses are worth every penny and then some. Thanks so much Ray & Kate

As a lifelong listener and lover of music, I came to Hack Music Theory with no musical background. I cannot play an instrument and I knew nothing about music theory whatsoever. It was only after stumbling across Ray and Kate's videos on YouTube that my interest was piqued. Their enthusiasm and ability to communicate complex ideas in a straightforward manner made me want to delve into the subject more. After reading Ray's books and consuming most of the free video content on their channel, the next logical step was to take the plunge and sign up for their apprenticeship. Although Ray and Kate themselves admit Apprenticeship #1 is a bit rough around the edges in places as it was the first time they had tried teaching in this way, there is an absolute wealth of knowledge that is imparted over the course of the song's creation. What really makes it special is that all of the theory is taught in a practical context, so you can literally hear it coming to life as the sections unfold and abstract theory manifests itself as real life music. Having finished the course, I have now started experimenting in a DAW to take those tentative first steps towards making my own music. Although I cannot be sure the music I create will be any good, I am confident now that it will be built upon a solid foundation and understanding of the fundamentals of making music. Thanks Ray and Kate!

Every step of the song unfolding, and every decision taken is explained clearly with nothing left out, making it easy to take the principles taught and use them right away. As teachers, Ray and Kate bring a huge sense of fun and enthusiasm to learning music theory and songwriting, making this one of the most enjoyable training courses I've ever taken part in! I'm already breaking out of ruts by applying what they teach, and roadblocks such as creating new sections, or key changes have simply disappeared! I couldn't be happier with the results and I'm already looking forward to Apprenticeship #2. Buy this in a heartbeat, it's sheer genius!

Whoa! I'm mind-blown! There's nothing like it out there. This idea of showing the whole songwriting process unfold in front of the camera is just super effective. Thank you so much for doing this :D writing songs has been one of my dreams back in teenage days (I ended up going for a "profession that pays the bills" instead, since I didn't have any artists in my family), and this course is by far the best investment of one's time in order to get a real-world view on what is actually songwriting. I'm really glad I've found you :)
